The NEW HOSTEL is a closely-knit unit of St.Joseph's family. It was founded in 1939 and is conducted by the Fathers of the Society of Jesus. It is a home away from home, a temple of learning and a family that has a long living tradition.

The motto of the New Hostel is "COR UNUM" (One Heart). The hostel has 4 Blocks with 310 rooms (single, double and triple beds) and can accommodate 830 students. The hostel provides 2 messes and there are 2 dining halls with modern kitchen facilities. Visitors' Room, Reading Room, Music Room, Television Room, Prayer Hall, Meeting Hall, Play Ground (1 Basket Ball Court, 2 Volley Ball Courts, 3 Tennikoit courts) and public address system are the other facilities provided in this hostel.

Students are admitted to the New Hostel only after they secure admission to the College and after a personal interview with the Director. The parent of the applicant is required to be present at the time of the interview. Membership of the Hostel is for only one year. Senior students wishing to be readmitted will apply again in the prescribed form. Those who have not shown sufficient improvement in their studies and are failing consistently in the examinations may be denied renewal of membership in the hostel.

Cleanliness is next to Godliness. Each one is responsible for the cleanliness of the room as well as of his immediate surroundings. This goes a long way in making the hostel more healthy and an enjoyable place to live in. Pasting pictures and papers on the walls, doors or windows of the living room and driving nails on the walls are strictly forbidden. Common furniture and property should be responsibly used. Hence damage of any kind to furniture and other common articles should be brought immediately to the notice of the Director or Asst. Director who may deal with the situation at his discretion.

Wholesome food is supplied in the hostel mess with the intention of helping the students to happily pursue their studies. We expect the students and parents to understand and appreciate the difficulties involved in running a mess for a big group of students. The hostel provides two messes: Vegetarian and Non-vegetarian. Change from one mess to another is permitted only on the first day of the month with the approval of the Director. Meals will be served at the following hours:

All are expected to be present on the reopening day of the College i.e. whenever the College reopens after a break. All should attend classes punctually and be present in their rooms during study hours. The hostel should be a place where at certain hours, all the students are able to do quiet, undisturbed and serious study.

Everyone should cultivate the habit of hard and consistent work. Strict silence is to be observed from 8.30 pm. to 7.30 am. on all days. At the beginning of the silence time, the hostellers pray together when a prayer song is played over the public address system. Students should stand outside their rooms during this sacred time.

Absence from the hostel at night without written permission from the Director is a serious fault. If anyone has a good reason to go out after 8.30 pm. or expects to return late, he should obtain a late-chit either from the Director or the Asst. Director. Day scholars are not allowed inside the hostel premises during silence hours and during class hours.

Responsibility and self-discipline are the only means to success in life and these are necessary for community living. To help the students acquire responsibility and self-discipline and with a view to providing order and harmony in the hostel campus and an atmosphere for hard work and study, the following guidelines are presented.

All are expected to attend classes regularly. Prior permission is needed for one to absent oneself from class. If one has to absent oneself from class one should meet the Director and apply for leave of absence. If anyone is absent from class for more than ten days without prior permission he will be summarily dismissed from the hostel. During silence time the hostellers are not allowed to go home or come back from home after expiry of leave of absence.

The reading room provides the dailies and periodicals. On Saturdays and Sundays the inmates are permitted to watch the Television.

Hostellers are obliged to attend all the functions held in the Hostel campus. Whistling or howling in any function in the Hostel campus is to be avoided. Smoking and consumption of alcoholic drinks in the Hostel campus is strictly prohibited.

Orderly behaviour is expected of the inmates in the dining hall. They should come for their meals well dressed, not in casual wear such as lungies and baniyans. Inmates should occupy the places in the order in which they enter leaving no vacant places so that serving meals will be done methodically. They should present themselves for meals during appointed hours and leave the dining hall as soon as they have finished eating. No one is allowed to enter the kitchen under any circumstances.

Toilets on the corridors will be kept open from 11 pm. to 5 am. only.

Trichy has a lot of places of worship for Christians, Hindus and Muslims. Inmates are encouraged to visit their places of worship everyday. The catholics are obliged to attend the weekly mass arranged in the Assembly Hall. Those who are not able to attend for valid reasons should report themselves to Fr. Director.

Saturdays and Sundays are study holidays. The hostellers are discouraged from going home during the weekends as a matter of routine. Those who would like to go home on urgent business should do so with prior permission from the Director.

Remedial Courses in English etc., will be periodically conducted by the Hostel management. Those who are weak in studies are obliged to make use of these facilities. Those who have more than two papers in arrears will not be readmitted in the Hostel.

In order to help the poor students and employees financially, hostellers are recommended to donate generously to the Hostel Development Fund and Workers Welfare fund.
