About the Institution

St. Joseph College established in 1844 by the Jesuits, members of one of the best known Catholic religious orders it has rendered 175 years of remarkable service, not merely to students from Tamil Nadu but also from States of India. St. Joseph's College is an affiliated First Grade College of the Bharathidasan University. It was affiliated to the Madras University in 1869. The college celebrated its centenary in 1944, sesquicentenary in 1995 und acquired the Five Star status, awarded by NAAC in 2000. It was recognised by UGC as a College with Potential for Excellence in 2004, reaccredited by NAAC with A+ grade in 2006 and accredited again by NAAC at A parade in 2012. The college celebrates 175 years of its inception this year. It is the only college in South India with the Special Heritage Status recognized by the UGC in 2015, a glutinous feather on the crown of the St. Joseph's. The DBT-Star College status is yet another important recognition for the educational excellence of our college. The college stands in the 28 position in National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) by the MHRD of India in 2018. The late Hon'ble Dr. AP.J. Abdul Kalam, an Aerospace Scientist who became the resident of India, did his B.Sc Physics at this college.

About the Department

The growth and development of the Department of Physics, one of the earliest departments of the College, is as follows: BA Physics Course was started in 1881. BSc (Hons) Physics Course was started in 1906 at SJC, the only College to offer it outside Madras City for nearly 40 years. MSc Physics Course was started in 1961. A new nomenclature was offered to the hitherto BA Physics as BSc Physics Course in 1930 and an additional section was added in 1963. BSc Physics Course was started in Shift-II in 1982. Recognition was offered by the University of Madras for research work leading to PhD Degree in 1971. MPhil Degree course was introduced in 1977, The Department of Physics has been the nucleus for starting two UG, two PG Computer Science and Electronics and two PG Diploma Programmes.
