The Department of Tamil embarks its academic journey since 1858. Besides Part-I Tamil for all undergraduate courses, the department offers B.A.and Ph.D. Programmes in Tamil language and Literature. Among the 23 faculty members (Aided-11,Self-financed-12), an impressive 19 hold Doctoral degrees. Furthermore, 15 have successfully cleared the UGC-NET. Their expertise extends beyond Tamil language and literature, encompassing fields like Sociology, Psychology, Linguistics, English, Computer application, Journalism and Education.
The Curriculum of Part-1 Tamil is designed to develop the interest on Tamil literature among the students as well as to instill its social values. This department stands first among the colleges in Tamil Nadu to offer three unique courses such as Communicative Tamil, Scientific Tamil, and Business Tamil. The B.A. Tamil curriculum is thoughtfully crafted to acquaint students not only with ancient Tamil literature but also with contemporary trends, preparing them for employment opportunities in both the Union and State governments, as well as fostering their entrepreneurial skill. This is one of the Pioneer departments in offering courses such as Social transformative Literature, Computing Tamil, Internet Tamil, and Human Rights in Tamil Literature. Additionally, the curriculum incorporates Indian Knowledge System and the knowledge heritage of Tamil. The Students are encouraged to do the field work on art and cultural monuments as their Internship.The department incorporates E Contents, Audio visual Aids and LCD projectors in teaching and utilizes assessment methods such as blog creation, PowerPoint presentations, Online Test, Report preparation, Collection of herbals and Public speaking
The Department has been actively organizing National, International, and state-level seminars on contemporary topics and publishing the souveneir at the inaugural ceremony for over 26 years. The department has a strong emphasis on research, with over 71 Ph.Ds produced and more than 18 research scholars currently pursuing. To enhance student skill development and cultural appreciation, the department offers a variety of programmes and initiatives such as Valanar Tamil Association, Nine endowment lectures, Creative writing club, Tamil research club, Folklore club, and Tamil Drama club. The department also provides value-added courses on 'Art of Translation', 'Art of temple' and 'Art of advertising', as well as certificate courses on 'Creative communication' and 'Tamil Traditional food'. These programs equip students with practical skills and a deeper understanding of Tamil heritage.
The Department of Tamil actively engages in a variety of activities such as Webinar, Training for competitive examination, Skill Enhancement training, Awareness programme for female students, Entrepreneurship seminar, and Remedial course for the slow learners. Additionally, the department organizes alumni meetings and parent-teacher meetings to foster strong community connections. The department has successfully completed three major research projects and four minor projects with the financial support of the University Grants Commission. Currently, two ongoing minor projects are funded by the college management. Furthermore, Seminars and Competitions have been organized with the support of the Central Institute of Classical Tamil Studies. The department's commitment to academic excellence is evident in the publication of Textbooks, Souveneirs, and scholarly books authored by its faculty members and Students.
Our faculty members have made significant contributions at various colleges in diverse roles, including Member of board of studies, Resource person at seminars, workshops, and FDP, Organizing secretary of Seminars and Workshops, Delegates of Seminars, Publishers of research articles in reputed Journals. The faculty members have proven their incredible leadership qualities in various resposibilities such as Dean, Vice Principal, Fine arts coordinator, NCC officer, NSS Programming officer, Editor of Journals, editorial board member, judges of various competition etc.. Furthermore, our faculty members have been lauded with prestigious awards from various organizations, underscoring their excellence and dedication.
The 'Valan Ayam' being published as a printed annual journal for over 29 years, is now being published as a Bi-Annual e-journal since 2021.
Our department has won the overall winner's trophy at the college sports meet for two consecutive years, 2022-2023 and 2023-2024.
It won the title of the Best Department for the extension activities in the academic year 2021-2022.
Tri-tamil Fest and the competition on 'Veeramamunivar' are organized annually as Inter collegiate event.
The department is actively engaged in academic activities, collaborating with Thanjavur Tamil University via a Memorandum of Understanding.
Creative writing workshops are conducted every year to train and enlighten the students from various colleges into creative writers and their works are published under the name of Vidhainel.
