Profile of the Department
The Department of Chemistry was founded in 1906 by Rev. Fr. Augustin Hass SJ initiating the Undergraduate course in Chemistry. As early as 1960 the M. Sc Chemistry was started. The Ph.D. Program in Chemistry was introduced in the year 1965. There are 22 members of the Staff, involved in teaching. They are assistingly collaborated by 8 Non-teaching Staff. There are about 400 Students learning Chemistry in UG, PG and M. Phil. programmes. Currently, more than 70 Ph.D. Scholars are doing their research in Chemistry. As many as 90 Ph.D. Scholars qualified their Doctoral Degree from our Department, till date. The Department of Chemistry houses 9 Laboratories, 1 Store stacked with Lab-wares, 9 Classrooms (AV-enabled) and 1 Staff-room. It is a FIST- and DBT-funded department.
The department is well equipped with a FIST- Instrumentation Lab. The students of chemistry have ready access to the FIST- department library, shelved with 280 titles of recent books in many fields of chemistry. The Department has published more than 750 research papers in many Journals of National and International repute.
The faculty members have authored 6 books in selected titles of Chemistry, so far. More than 12 Practical Manuals have been published by the department for private circulation. For the past 10 years the Department has been conducting CSIR-NET/SET/GATE and IIT Coaching classes. It has helped many scholars qualify these examinations. The Department has a plan of starting a new B.Sc. Program in the subject - Food Sciences.
Salient Features of the Department
It is DST-FIST funded Department. It is chosen to be the Star Department under DBT-Star College Scheme.
It has a well-equipped Instrumentation Lab for doing advanced Lab Experiments and Research.
The Instrumental facilities are FTIR Spectrometer, UV-VIS Spectrometer , Electro Analyzer, HPLC - HP 1100 series, Geiger-Muller Counter, GOUY Balances, Polarimeters, etc.
The curriculum is designed focusing on developing the following skills in our students : Employability Skills, Entrepreunerial Skills and Analytical Skills.
